First, it was the holding period for the 34th annual Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational. Then, the Eddie was officially called on and the stoke was level was high amongst participants and spectators. It would be the first the Eddie in eight years. And then, as quickly as it had been called on, it was off again.
The Eddie was cancelled due to “poor wind conditions.” Even though surfers and spectators were alerted, Waimea wasn’t, and she decided to fire regardless. Sure, there was some wind, but there was also some serious swell and plenty of bombs. It lined up to be one of the best Waimea days in quite some time and surfers, photographers, locals, and visitors flocked to the North Shore to catch a piece of the action. Even though the contest didn’t go, we’re sure that Eddie still would have.
