Last week, The New York Times published a piece on the controversial Quiksilver Pro New York. Entitled New York’s Urban Aloha, the article deconstructs the possible motivations behind Quik’s choice of venue, makes an interesting comparison of present-day New York to pre-crowd Hawaii, and reinforces that ever-present worry about wave quality.
“If showcasing the underappreciated athleticism of surfing is the goal, why not hold the contest in, say, Fiji or Mexico, where the waves would be far more likely to prove worthy of the surfers?
Perhaps because Quiksilver is coming to town less for great surf than for greater market share.”
