The Inertia

It’s a tale as old as….well, as old as the ski resort industry. The race to be the first resort to open each season. This year, if it counts, it happened on the East Coast at  Ski Ward, a 45-acre park with nine slopes and four lifts that made enough snow to be the first to open.

But the normal battle is usually between Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Resort off I-70 in Colorado. And that historic face off was actually won by A-Basin last weekend, with more snow on the way to Colorado, it sounds like.

Lucas Catania was there after making the long drive on snow-covered roads. That’s what you call dedication. Catania puts together some interesting winter content (and pretty well informed, if you ask me). He recently ranked 27 of his favorite North American ski resorts with footage from almost all of them. Dude has gotten around. He posted an A-Basin vlog a couple of days ago.

“Opening day at Arapahoe Basin for the 2023-2024 ski season,” he wrote. “We made the trek out to Silverthorne, Colorado from Utah to begin our ski season at A-Basin. So epic that we were able to sneak in some skiing before Halloween and we even caught some fresh snow as a bonus. Stoked for the season ahead!”
