The Inertia

Having to pack it in once the sun sets on a solid day of swell never seems fair. For some of us, night surfing is the logical answer. We surf waves we’re a little more familiar and comfortable with than others. We squeeze out every ray of light from a pier or the road that runs right along the water.

But surfing at night’s not as straightforward as simply paddling out and catching waves. One typically needs a few specific conditions to come together for it even to be worthwhile. Or…you could just pack a really powerful light on top of your head for 90 minutes. That’s what these guys did.

The Black Swan claims to be “the most powerful autonomous and waterproof lamp in the world,” producing 7,000 lumens — a fancy scientific way to say “it’s really bright.” And as you’d imagine, the most fun way to test out something like that would be to find waves at a pretty popular spot where crowds are the norm. Enter what looks like a fun night of surfing Mundaka. Earlier on this day, the Lost in the Swell crew surfed one of Europe’s most crowded spots with two and three people trying to squeeze onto the face of every wave. At night, though? No worrying about hassling for waves. No looking over their shoulders to make sure somebody else isn’t flying down the line. And it’s not like you have to worry much about how ridiculous you’d look with a giant light on top of your head while also wearing a backpack because, well, nobody can see you in the dark anyway.
