The Inertia

When Bobby Martinez famously quit surfing on the tour, it was clear to everyone that he didn’t need it. It’s more likely that the tour needed him, but the tour soldiered on, a little worse for his absence. Bobby, however, just went surfing. Now, surf fans don’t get to see quite so much of his powerful carves and that Martinez style, so when an edit drops, it’s like a cool glass of water in a parched throat.

When the Channel Islands folks were putting the edit you see above together, they asked Bobby if he had a song in mind for it. He didn’t hesitate. He wanted the same one that play in Taj Burow’s part in “Momentum: Under the Influence” circa 2001.

The board he’s riding, the Two Happy, is a collaboration between Britt Merrick, Dane Reynolds, and Parker Coffin. ‘The Two Happy takes all the high-performance speed and flow of the original Happy but makes it more accessible and user-friendly for a broader range of surfers and conditions,” the CI team explained. “With added entry rocker and increased double concave, the Two Happy is looser, rolls rail to rail more easily, and carves better in the pocket. Our team describes the board as exceptionally fast, responsive, and under the feet. The fuller rails and wider, thicker tail block provide ease of paddle, ride, and acceleration.”

Whatever they did to it, the Two Happy makes Bobby Martinez happy. Too happy.
