“Makai Side: How Did We Get Here?”  is a retelling of Hawaiian surf history. It explores everything from depictions of 18th-century surfers by British artists aboard trade ships to Duke Kahanamoku’s influence. There are highlights of surf culture in the 1920s and 1930s, Makaha and Hawaiian Culture in the 1940s, the accomplishments of the heavies in the 1950s and 1960s, surfing’s innovation era the 1970s, and the power surfers of the 1980s.
