Given Leigh Powis’ work with Super Proof and the title of “Cabin Fever,” I was expecting an eerie, gritty tone for Part 2 of Seeking Nirvana. We get a taste of such an inflection in the first thirty seconds, but the rest of the episode develops differently. The soundtrack, more upbeat than that of episode 1, feels like it was straight out of a 1960s surf movie. The lively and old school jams contrast with the saturated filter of the lens, or whatever editing trick was employed. The tunes also contrast well with the booming bass sound coinciding with every stomp occurring on screen. Powis’ style at work.
Part 2 also officially introduces the characters in this series, providing a short skiing resume for each. Drone shots are prevalent, as well as lines that involve more than just one big cliff; the first stomp is followed by some avoidance of trees and another cliff to finish it off.
By the way, it seems that despite growing up in the British Columbia mountains, these guys found some time to learn how to surf.
