The Inertia

“I think coming from where we came from challenged us to open our minds — and we had no choice but to be creative.” – Mark McMorris

We’re big fans of Mark McMorris. It is damn difficult not to be. While his countless accolades precede him, it is his soft-spoken presence and reputational determination that define him.

Mark Craig McMorris were raised in Saskatchewan, a province in the middle of Canada. There isn’t much in the way of mountains or slopes, but the brothers made do: wakeboarding, skateboarding, and “scratching tooth and nail” to get on a snowboard whenever they were able to.

They even went as far as to take advantage of their Costco trampoline in the backyard, with one brother double bouncing the other as the got used to being upside down and every which way. Through this training of sorts, Mark stomped tricks long before hitting a kicker. And that preparation has served him well throughout his careers. At 18 years old, he was the first to throw a triple cork, not only in a freeride but in competition as well. Today he continues to push the limits of what we thought and think is possible.

Tomorrow? And this weekend at the X Games? Who knows.
