The Inertia

This is mountain biking at its very best — raw and powerful in all its treaded glory while paying heed to the vast expanse of nature that surrounds. So many edits these day overlay the footage with heart-pumping soundtracks and awe-inspiring special effects including slow-mo when, in reality, everything we need is already there. The production room doings ultimately pull the lens back so far that we lose the intimate give-and-take that makes mountain biking (or any outdoor action sport for that matter) the transcendent pursuit that it is.

Raw 100 is a new series bent of returning us to the roots, so to speak. There is no slow-mo and no music… simply 100 seconds of untouched purity.

As Red Bull explains, it is “designed to highlight the talent and creativity of filmmakers. It’s said that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, and this series celebrates that idea.”

This installment, the second of two thus far, features the work of videographer Liam Mullany and mountain biker Bas van Steenbergen. The boys take to British Columbia and, as you’ll see, come back with the goods

How wonderful is that? With the only sounds emanating from machine or Mother Nature, it speaks to the unmistakable sensation of what it actually feels like to cruise the trail. There are too many times when we think more is better; these filmmakers prove that that is not always the case.

Also, in case you missed it, the first in the series saw Rupert Walker follow Brandon Semenuk rip through the rain in a slightly more freestyle-focused shred sesh.
