When most people think Greece, they don’t think surfing. They–or I, at least–think Zorba. I think fat black olives, whitewashed building, rolling fields of olive groves. I think the Durrell family, complete with Roger. I think old, toothless men sipping strong wine, baking in the heat with a hand-rolled cigarette. I think Athens, the Acropolis, and the Parthenon. I don’t think surfing. Perhaps, though, I should.
Marlon Lipke, Yannick De Jager, and Gony Zubizarreta have been looking in the area for a long time. Until now, however, the opportunity hadn’t arisen. The Mediterranean, while beautiful and blue, isn’t the most consistent place on earth. But, as the video above proves, timing is everything. When a friend and local shaper called them up and guaranteed that the forecast was going to turn Greece into something it rarely is, they bit the bullet and hopped on a plane.
It was a short window–just one day–but they put in the time. Over the course of nine hours, they surfed two different waves, then made their way to a weird, slabby chunk of heaven. By that time, they could barely move their arms.
So although Greece is all those things I mentioned above, it is much more. It’s surfing, too. And from the looks of it, it’s basically perfect–as long as you time it right.
