The Inertia

Waimea Bay just had the busiest “off week” in surfing. From bracing for the Eddie to Eddie not going to the Bay still turning on a few hours too late, this one wave found its way into our consciousness all week long. Above is one of those days, only with a less familiar view.

Part of why drone footage captures our attention so easily is that it lets us see something from a whole new perspective. If you’ve been blessed with a moment of standing on the cliffs here while Waimea Bay coughs up wave after wave, you can’t help but wonder what the view’s like in the lineup. Every view here is priceless but only a handful of people on the planet will ever get to take it all in from the water. Meanwhile from the shore, the peak is so damn far away, with faceless surfers taking off on monsters, it’s almost impossible to tell who’s who while watching in person. But that’s also part of Waimea’s charm. She’s such a great leading lady that she won’t allow any single person to upstage her. Sure, the guys and gals on 10-foot pieces of foam get their glory but we all know who you showed up to see. We all know who the one and only headliner is when Waimea Bay calls the day (or doesn’t, sometimes).
