50 years old and “retired,” but none of that matters — the American still shreds better than most. In fact, from a wave score standard, Tom Curren surfed better than everyone on the tour with the exception Joel Parkinson, the only other competitor to get a perfect 10.
Supertubes was firing and the conditions were perfect for a legendary rivalry revisited (the full recap below). The first heat of the inaugural Heritage Series saw two of the world’s most iconic surfers and former world champions trade waves for what became an instant classic. With double-overhead surf, Curren and Occy had more than enough opportunity to display what put them in our sport’s lore. But at the end of the day it was the Californian that took control, eventually leaving the water early in a convincing victory over the Raging Bull.
According to the commentators, the icons were 9-9 in their lifetime series going up against each other. But now it is 10-9 in the American’s favor. Hopefully Occy is able to level the series at Huntington next week so that these legends keep going at it!
