“Man, that was an awesome 8 hour layover.” That isn’t exactly a common quote from any surf trip. But if you’re lucky enough to connect through Munich each summer you have a chance of hearing that. Every year the Munich Airport gets a 3-week facelift, with the installation of a standing wave pool for the European Championship in Stationary Wave Riding. That means no more napping with board bags. You can watch the actual “surf” contest, as Germany is a popular community of river surfers with Munich’s “urban surfers.” Or when the contest itself isn’t on, you can get in the water yourself for the free surfing session.
It may not be sunny dry barrels in Bali, but this isn’t a horrible way to break up that full day of flight time.
