Stoked! That’s the best word to describe both the person and the documentary, “Curt.” Curt Harper is a 50-year old competitive surfer who was diagnosed with autism as a child. It’s a disorder that affects 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys, according to AutismSpeaks.org. It changes the way affected children communicate verbally and non-verbally, as well as the way the surrounding world interacts with them. The sad news is that the rates of affected families and children have been skyrocketing in the past decades, while there is still no cure for autism to go with its growing prevalence.
But of all the challenges autism presents, “Curt” is about a man whose love for surfing isn’t impacted one bit by autism, and Harper devotes a lot of time sharing that love with the groms and through his involvement in the NSSA.
