When it comes to surf videos, movies and documentaries, there’s a ton of material that’s amazingly good: sick barrels, aerial maneuvers and radical turns. Yet it is uncommon to find material that’s philosophical, inspirational and educational. Here are five movies that aren’t just surf porn; movies about surfing that will give you goosebumps, adrenaline rushes and maybe even feel a little warm and fuzzy inside.
1. Surfwise
I really enjoyed watching this documentary because of its raw, real and touching at the same time, makes me want to raise my kids (if I ever have any) to become amazing surfers.
2. The Endless Summer
An all-time classic, The Endless Summer is a groovy portal to the times way back when surfing was a whole different thing. Think of it as meeting your grandpa when he was young. An absolute must watch!
3. Step Into Liquid
This movie is an amazing account of surf culture and lifestyle everywhere. It’s an insightful film that makes people understand that surfing goes way beyond sport, and begins to describe something that’s just so hard to describe.
4. Castles In The Sky
This film takes you through an epic journey of culture, self discovery and surfing wisdom. It features one of the most breathtaking soundtracks, and it’s filmed in a wide variety of locations. A must watch for those travel-surf junkies.
5. Chasing Mavericks
This is the only Hollywood produced film I’ve included in this list, and for a good reason. Besides being based on a true story, it’s so inspiring and well made that it actually reflects what surfing as a spiritual pursuit really is. That never-ending quest for freedom, through the biggest wave or the deepest barrel. This film makes you want to train hard and paddle out when it’s big.
I know there are many more epic titles that should be included in this post, so leave a comment with your favorite surf movie and why you liked it… let’s grow this list!
