The Inertia

On a scale of 1 to “I’m not sure how to feel about this,” this new revelation ranks as far on the latter part of the spectrum as I’ve felt about anything in recent months. To be clear, news that electric hydrofoils will soon hit the market isn’t exactly new information. Lift Foils posted the video above on Vimeo four months ago with the declaration that their “efoil” would be the world’s first electric hydrofoil once it hit the market.

Back in August of last year, though, Kitesurfing Magazine ran an article titled “Electric Hydrofoil – A New Sport Is Born!” with the following video:

As you’ll notice, the Jetfoiler in the video above is a different electric hydrofoil, developed by Kai Concepts. Upon perusal of their site, though, it’s unclear if the Jetfoiler is even available for purchase. In other words, the “world’s first” distinction will come down to a matter of semantics, but the bottom line is electric hydrofoils, or “efoils” will soon be on the market – much to the chagrin of anyone who hates on SUPs or hydrofoils or electric surfboards. But you know what? Even though I probably wouldn’t go out and buy one of these, if someone gave me the chance to hop on one, I’d give it a go. And I’d probably have a blast!
