The Inertia

Not only is she starring on the silver screen in her own installments of 60 Minutes Australia, but surfing’s leading lady is making headlines as one of the top 50 “earning sports stars” in Australia. Stephanie Gilmore claims the 39th spot on the list raking in $1.75 million, a total that takes into account both on-field salaries as well as money earned through endorsement. And according to BRW, that makes her the top earning female Australian sports star.

As explained by Stab magazine, “Steph’s earnings excludes a hefty world title bonus. But with her Roxy deal (roughly $1m), contracts with Sanitarium and Nikon (rumoured to be north of $250k apiece), and Ford wheels ($100k ambassador fee), it’s no wonder the big-monied darling sits at 38th spot on the BRW list. She’s a sophisticated and marquee surfer who, rightfully so, is cashing in on the non-endemics.”

The list also included Mick Fanning (ranked 19) with $2.7 million, Taj Burrow (41) with $1.5 million, Josh Kerr (42) with $1.5 million, and an unranked but “one to watch” Tyler Wright who is on the cusp of breaking the $1 million mark.

What does this all mean? Aside from a big bank account, each of them (as long as they spend and save accordingly) will be able to enjoy those tropical locales a couple decades longer than their active careers would otherwise allow. How does this affect us laypeople? Um…
