Editor’s Note: “Spot Snapshot” is a new series that highlights an image and explains what you’d never know by simply looking at it. As the cliché goes, “a picture is worth 1000 words.” Every week, a featured photographer will bring you both. See the first installment from Burleigh Heads (Australia) here.

This was one of those mornings that we expected to wake up to perfect head high waves, but it didn’t really work out that way at first. Every spot we checked seemed to have a little morning sickness, so we ended up driving around a bit more than we intended.

Out of curiosity, because it looked good from down the beach, we checked out a sandbar we had never surfed at before. As soon as we walked over the dunes, we saw a pretty good set roll through. At this point, there wasn’t a single person in the water. Only the handful of fisherman on the beach.

Needless to say, it didn’t take the boys long to get their suits on and get out out in the water. The sun was super bright at this point in the day, and half the beach was closed off for endangered birds that were nesting, so it made shooting a bit tricky. It didn’t take Nick Menditto (pictured) long to paddle into this backhand tube on his 5’4 Rozbern: Option.

It ended up being a great morning with just a few buddies trading waves and good times on one of the first warm days of the year. You really can’t ask for much more than a day like this.
