The Inertia

It’s absolutely gorgeous, for one. And while these aesthetically-pleasing “cinematic” takes on the surf film may be flooding your feeds as of late, Globe Creative Director Joe G’s style and execution (at least from the trailer and past films) is always cleaner, and more consistent. But, more importantly, they are taking surf further, and deeper into the world. The main difference is that rather than introducing people to a new sport, the sun-lustful travelers will show people to new places.

Now, this is in no way asking whether these surfers are as innovative or influential as the likes of Bruce Brown, Mike Hynson and Robert August — but the trailer brings to mind the admittedly ambitious reach that Strange Rumblings In Shangri La might very well be the current generation’s Endless Summer. Though, this is only the trailer. Will it be more along the lines of the road to El Dorado, leaving us high and dry on a quest for the fabled yet ever-elusive gold?

The film premieres on July 31 — in the middle of the U.S. Open — at Long Beach.
