Summer’s end is fast approaching in the Northern Hemisphere, and for many Southern California Middle School and High School aged students this is not necessarily all bad news. You see, with the start of the new school year also comes the start of a new Scholastic Surf Series season.
What is the Scholastic Surf Series (SSS)? The SSS is a series of competitive surfing events that take place along the Southern California Coast for Middle and High School students that attend schools that have formed a surf team and which has joined the SSS.
SSS Competition Days are a thrill to witness and to be involved in, combining competitive rivalry with a shared love of surfing. The pure stoke and energy that is shared by those that compete, witness, coach, judge and administrate throughout the day is electric and contagious.
Many of the students that compete in the SSS would not otherwise participate in an extracurricular activity for their school, providing many of these students with a newfound sense of belonging – a belonging to their team, their school and their community. It can well be said that the SSS, and its predecessor the Interscholastic Surfing Federation, has helped positively form many young people’s lives through a strong sense of kindness to others, an increased passion for our sport, and a vision of what community should look like.
Many of the top level surfers that compete on the SSS also compete in more prominent and widely known competitive surfing series. The SSS therefore provides these surfers with a more relaxed and enjoyable competitive experience that they can share in with their friends and schoolmates. This also gives these surfers a stage to shine on, bringing pride for their team, their school and well as for themselves.
Beginning and Intermediate surfers also benefit greatly through participating in the SSS, since most of the surfers that fall within this skill set would not have a venue for participating in an enjoyable competitive, as well as social, surfing experience. These surfers also benefit by developing and learning solid water skills through adult coaching and student mentoring.
