The Inertia

Tahiti is really going off for the Billabong Pro Tahiti. Like, really REALLY going off. “The best I’ve ever seen it,” said the best we’ve ever seen. When Kelly’s claiming that, it really makes one sit up and pay attention. But even more than that, it’s when some giant behemoth rolls in, jacks up over the reef, and squares right up with some of the best surfers on earth looking down the face… and pulling back. Shit must be really real.

Round three was a day for the ages. It started out a little on the small size, but perfect. As the sun moved across the sky, the waves got bigger and bigger and better and better. Kelly banged out five casual 9.0 rides, making drops that, honestly, shouldn’t be made. John John actually might have fallen asleep inside a cavernous wave. Mick Fanning took one of the most incredible dives ever (which sadly, isn’t in the video above), Kai Otton got a look at what a foam ball looks like from behind, and Kolohe grew a little beard thing. All in all, it was pretty successful. And guess what? It’s going to get better.
