Réunion Island should be known for its perfect waves, perfect climate, and friendly people. Instead, it’s known for shark attacks. And now another surfer has been bitten by a shark–thankfully, not fatally.
According to Surf Session, Eddy Chaussalet, a 47-year-old surfer, was bitten on the arm yesterday afternoon at La Follette. According to Surf Europe, the well-known surfer won’t lose his arm, despite the severity of his injuries. Chaussalet is a familiar face on Réunion, competing regularly in events and one of the hardest chargers in bigger waves.
This attack comes after 13-year-old Elio Canestri’s tragic death just a few months ago. His passing sparked the Réunion public’s call for action, and the government responded with an eight-part plan that aims to deal with the complicated issue.
We’re wishing Eddy a speedy recovery.
