Tim McKenna, after hours. Photo: Benjamin Sanchis

I was born in Sydney, Australia, but spent most of my youth near the beaches of South West France. After a few years back in Australia to complete a university degree,  I re-based myself in Europe during the 90’s. Although mainly focused on surf photography, I soon branched out into all the emerging extreme sports like snowboarding, windsurfing, kitesurfing and even rock-climbing and motocross. I have since been lucky enough to have worked with many of the iconic world champions that have made up the young history of those sports.  My best images, created in remote places around the world,  have made the covers of the leading magazines and illustrated books while my landscape, fashion and commercial work has appeared in global advertising campaigns. I started my website back in 1998, and it has since become a reference in surf and outdoor photography because of its updated content and high traffic volumes.  In 2005,  I released a fine art poster collection and in 2007 a coffee table book on the Teahupoo wave. It has become a best-seller, published in seven different languages.

I am still a keen surfer, snowboarder and a rusty black belt (second dan) in the martial art of kendo. In quiet moments,  I sit down at my keyboard and improvise.  For the last 10 years I have been based on the island of Tahiti with my wife and son, working on capturing the magic of  French Polynesia.  I still tour the world,  dedicated to the nomadic life, searching for the myriad forms of light and special moments of nature that make unforgettable images and great memories.
