CJ Hobgood is one of the kindest, stand-up individuals currently surfing on the ASP World Tour. He managed to do it sans major sponsor for ridiculous amount of time until Salty Crew came along – especially given that he’s a 2001 World Champion. Never mind that he offered to part with his World Title trophy to anyone willing to donate $15,000 to fund his new documentary project about the evolving relationship of one of surfing’s best brother duos: CJ and Damien Hobgood. He wears his heart on his sleeve – whether it’s on his Twitter/Instagram or in person. Dude doesn’t back down from sharing his true feelings. We have always respected that.
So it’s a bummer to see a disgusting photo appear of CJ’s seriously mangled foot and news of injury surface today. CJ just posted the following on his Facebook page:
I never know what my story looks like but I do know His plans are always better than mine. Free surfing before the event this morning and I will be unable to compete in my heat today. Looking forward to the pressure cooker that pipe will bring for me and my future.
CJ also went on to say, “It’s not even about the stitches. It’s cut from the top to the bottom. You could stick your whole hand in it. It’s cut in the fascia and everything. I’ve got a plate and eight screws in that foot and if it gets infected there going to have to rip the screws out and my foot’s probably going to fall apart at that point.”
Here’s hoping a skilled doctor and some deep stitches have that foot sealed up like a zipper.
Tune in to the ASP to watch the rest of the action from Portugal.
