The Inertia

Kelly Slater does a lot of interviews. The strange thing is that he does the majority of them with non-surfing outlets. He’s notoriously hard to nail down, but when someone does, he nearly always gives his full attention to the interviewer, no matter who it is.

Remember a few months ago when he spoke very candidly with Luke Rudkowski of popular alternative media site We Are Change? He holds nothing back–when someone asks, he answers, consequences be damned. His responses are well thought out, measured, and he’ll stand by what he says, regardless of backlash.

In this interview, Kelly sits down immediately after his win in Tahiti to talk about many things… and surfing isn’t really one of them. Dave Nagel, the man sitting across from him, is a very accomplished martial artist. With 25 years of experience under his (black) belt, he’s a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athlete who has competed and medaled at a local, state and international level. He is also the former head coach of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program at the UFC gym in Sydney.

In the interview above, Kelly talks in detail about the benefits of Jiu Jitsu, the marijuana trade, and the recent Conor McGregor v Nate Diaz fight.
