Well…surgery was a success.

A post shared by Kelly Slater (@kellyslater) on

It’s official. Kelly Slater just had successful surgery on his broken foot. He updated followers of his Instagram account to the news today with a picture of his statue in Cocoa Beach, Florida wrapped in a symbolic bandage. Slater, of course, broke the foot when he pulled into a close-out barrel during a freesurf at the J-Bay Open in South Africa after coming out on fire in his Round 1 heat.

Along with the Instagram post, he also posted this story on his account, detailing the five breaks in his foot and the hardware he had installed. “Went something like this,” reads the caption.

Slater originally thought the injury would only keep him out for a couple of contests. But after speaking with his physician, the prognosis became much bleaker. “I’ll find out next week but the prognosis is now looking like 4-6 months recovery,” he said at the time. We’ve had no word from the Slater camp on the injury after reaching out to the 11-time champ and the only interview he’s done since was with the WSL’s Rosy Hodge during J-Bay coverage.
