“There’s been a lot of talk about me retiring,” says Kelly. “I don’t have to give an answer to that.” Kelly Slater is a lot of things. Legend. G.O.A.T., if you will. But also enigmatic. For all the time the champ’s been in the spotlight, there’s a lot we don’t know about him – and in some cases it’s because he (whether intentionally or not) misleads. Late last year Kelly announced he’d retire after one more go at a world title. He’s since walked that back to say that he won’t do the tour “full time.” And his most recent sound bite seems to leave more questions than answers. I’ll point out that everyone is asking him about it because he brought it up in the first place, but I digress.
Still, beyond the subject of hanging it up, Kelly’s new series Continuance is unsuspectingly candid, vulnerable, and incredibly well done. Think John John’s series, Twelve, but a touch more cerebral. Part 1 is all about Kelly’s time in Australia. and to avoid over explaining how good this series is, or spoil it in some way, I’ll leave it at this: you’re gonna wanna make time for this one.
