If you’ve been betting on Josh Kerr to win and win big every contest for the last five years your loyalty finally paid off. The Aussie has had himself one great career, all without winning a contest since a 2010 ‘QS victory, and a win at Todos Santos definitely marked a high point this weekend. Ironically enough this was also the first time the Big Wave Tour event went off at Todos since that same year.

After finishing the 2015 CT ranked #11 Kerr almost didn’t make it to Baja for his BWT appearance. Currently living in California, the Australian had to plea for a one-day pass while issues with his green card are being sorted out. But from the sound of it Kerr wasn’t particularly worried about missing the event as much as he just wanted to get to Mexico and score some big waves.”I didn’t have any expectations,” he said after his win. “I just wanted to surf the wave with all these guys. To walk away with a win – I feel like one of those dogs with his head out the car window. I was smiling the whole time I was paddling around in the Final.”

In that Final Kerr beat out Big Wave Tour heavy hitters Greg Long and Nic Lamb, who are both in the hunt for a championship with top 5 rankings. Carlos Burle, Damien Hobgood and Rusty Long rounded out the Final with Kerr’s win vaulting him into the 5th overall ranking on the WSL’s Big Wave Tour. Not too bad for a guy who hasn’t won a contest since 2010.

“I literally haven’t won a contest for probably about five years,” he added after the event. “I don’t even know what this feeling of winning is going through my body right now. I’m kind of tripping.”
