The Inertia

Jordy Smith claimed the trophy at the 2011 Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay for the second year in a row on Saturday, after defeating Mick Fanning in the final –  proving once again that local knowledge often trumps experience. “I’ve been coming here since I was seven years old,” he said from atop the podium. “It’s been an incredible week for me.” His win moves him from 5th place into 2nd on the ASP World Tour ratings, while Fanning goes from 8th to 4th.

After a dreary waiting period with less-than-perfect conditions, the charts finally showed some life in the last three days of competition, allowing for the quarters, semis, and the final to be held in respectable surf. The Billabong Pro concluded in stormy, four-to-five foot conditions, with competitors contending against not only their heat-draw, but rain and wind as well.

The contest results put Joel Parkinson, the 2008 event winner, in the first position on the road to the 2011 World Title. Parko consistently laid down high scores throughout the event until the semis, where Fanning took him out in the tedious, choppy conditions.

The next stop in the 2011 ASP World Title season takes place in Tahiti from August 20th – 31st.
