A tow-in Jet Ski driver ran over a surfer at Uluwatu yesterday, knocking the surfer out and leaving him with a fractured nose and in need of 12 stitches in his head.
The injured surfer is a friend of Single Fin bar owner Tai Graham, who offered assurance the surfer is on the mend in this Facebook post:
“The bro is ok and home now. 12 stitches to his head and multiple fractures in his nose but he’s sweet. Can’t remember anything after paddling for the wave till he was being looked after on the cliff. However, whoever helped him in Thank You. Tosca and the local boys! Sksma 🙏. For a mad Maori with a nick name “Freaky” I’m surprised how calm he is…….for now. To the 2 clowns on the ski’s you know who you are, I’ve already spoken to you both and let you know what’s up! Looking forward to catching up and having a nice quiet cup of tea with you and the Bro’s.” [sic]
The incident highlights the contentious issue of Jet Skis buzzing the lineup at Uluwatu and other popular paddle surfing spots. Making matters worse, the surf was only in the 6-foot range when the accident occurred. However, Graham was quick to silence those who would blame the accident on the presence of skis alone. He added this to his post:
“Before everyone jumps on the anti-ski wagon, if you know how to drive one and where to drive one they’re sweet. But not in this case.”
