The Inertia

Whether you’re a fan of the widespread popularity or not, action sports these days are experienced by so many millions more people than however many make it down a slope or out to the lineup. In this digital age of easy sharing, anyone from a two-year-old toddler to a eighty-seven-year-old senior has the ability to shred through face shots at Baldface or get barreled at Pipe. Sure… YouTube and Vimeo videos are nothing like the real thing of being there in the flesh, but in a continuously smaller world, shared experiences bring us closer together, give us a glimpse of lives we might not otherwise see, bridging the gap of both understanding and appreciation.

Like other forward-thinking everyman designs, the TomTom Bandit recognizes that shared experience and is doing what it can to further bridge the gaps by packing an unprecedented amount of do-how into an action cam.

The 4K aside, the major innovation being talked about with the action cam is the easy-upload functionality. or built-in media server. They describe the process as being “just shake to edit.”

Seems simple, almost too simple.  What they mean is that all you have to do is open up the accompanying downloadable app, shake your smartphone, and all the cuts (times you were recording) are assembled on a timeline. Want to jump into Final Cut for a more serious production? The removable battery has a micro SD card so you’re able to upload to the workstation without cables.

And then there is one of the coolest features in the highlight sensors that automatically mark those potential sweet spots in the edit.

Basically, the so-called “Big Moments” are identified by sensors that target speed, g-force, accelerations, altitude, rotation and even heartbeat — all those telltale signs that you’re having a helluva time. Don’t trust it? Use a small handheld remote to set reminders of when stoke was out of control. Then when editing cue in on those moments with slow-mo. Seems like a do-everything video suite.

Anyway, about that BASE jumping billy goat.

Along with Baadass Bill, there are quite a few action sports athletes repping the team.

Such as mountain biker Danny Hart…

…skier Tiril Sjåstad Christiansen…

…and freerunner/James Bond’s stunt double Damien Walters.

Needless to say, Bill is in gooooood company.
