The Inertia

I was lucky enough to be leaving the firehouse Friday night just as winter storm Jonas, or otherwise known as The Blizzard of 2016, was lining up in New York City. I felt bad for the guys who had to handle the mayhem that would ensue, but I knew that I had to take advantage of being home over the weekend.

Saturday was nuts; a straight whiteout. Sunday morning was bluebird, as the wind was offshore and the waves were firing. In the spirit of not being lazy I went out and drove over to Lido to shoot some empties. My original intentions were empty waves for Instagram. However, I came over the dune and saw James Theobald getting barreled. I thought, “Ok, good. Some guys know what they’re doing out there. Maybe I can get some clips for them.” I shot in the freezing but sunny conditions for about three hours.

The next day, Mike Nelson shot me a text saying he had some clips from the storm and I could put an edit out if I wanted. I grabbed what he had, which included Joe Parrino’s GoPro POVs and began transcoding and organizing. I told Nelly that if we had enough for an edit I would make it happen. I ended up having a lot fun editing, utilizing a song I’ve wanted to put something to for a while. This is what I came up with. Thanks to Mike Nelson for weathering the whiteout conditions with the boys on Saturday.
