“When the wave breaks here, don’t be there.”
We all remember Turtle’s famous words from the 1987 surf classic North Shore, and it looks like Turtle, Rick Kane, and the whole gang might be back for another round. Universal Pictures has officially given the thumbs for a social media campaign launch dubbed “I Want My North Shore 2” to rally fans. Randal Kleiser, the producer of the original film, is leading the charge. Kleiser hopes that with enough fan support, Universal will fund and begin the sequel’s production. Should the film move forward, the original writer, producer and director will work on the project.
For those of you who need a little refresher, North Shore was the ultimate ’80s Hollywood surf movie. A young Rick Kane decides to take his wave pool skills to Oahu’s infamous North Shore to put them to the test at the renowned Banzai Pipeline. With help from a few locals, as well as some resistance, Kane learns how to surf Hawaii’s powerful waves. The movie featured a handful of professional surfers including Laird Hamilton, Gerry Lopez, Shaun Tomson, Mark Occhilupo, Mark Foo, Derek Ho, Ken Bradshaw and Christian Fletcher.
If Kleiser can round up enough fans, we might just see the next chapter of Hollywood’s most memorable surf movie.
