There are few people walking this earth who inspire us the way that Bethany Hamilton does. Hamilton, who lost her left arm to a Tiger shark while surfing at home in Kauai in 2003 (which was well documented in the widely circulated book and film sharing her story), still blows us away with her outstanding surfing – air reverses and gigantic barrels at Pipeline, Teahupooo, and beyond. When we’re beginning to feel uninspired, we think: Bethany. Then we get motivated.
Today, Bethany and her husband Adam Dirks announced that they will adding a new member to their family – due June 2015. And…it’s going to be a little boy.
“It’s been a pretty crazy last four months finding out that we’re going to be parents, and that life’s kinda going to be changing…it’s all really exciting,” said Hamilton, 25.
No name just yet, but it appears Bethany, who is 22 weeks pregnant, and Adam will be inviting the world into their home to join their growing family through the upcoming film Surfs Like a Girl, a project with Aaron Lieber that has been put on pause until Bethany has acclimated to motherhood.
“I’ve been surfing throughout my whole pregnancy. I’ve surfed Teahupoo and Pipeline. I plan to surf as long as I can. Once the belly’s pretty big – maybe just mellow it out and spend more time swimming and enjoying the ocean and doing other activities,” said Hamilton.
There you have it folks. Bethany Hamilton. The only pregnant mom to ever surf Teahupoo. You can add that one to your list, Bethany. You’ll probably keep that one for a long time to come.
