The Inertia

Pipeline is, without question, one of the most dangerous waves on the planet. We were reminded of this nasty truth just moments ago when Bede Durbidge suffered a horrific wipeout on his first wave of his Round 3 matchup with Fox teammate Keanu Asing. The extent of his injuries are still unconfirmed, but a recent update claimed that Bede had slammed extremely hard on the dangerous reef at Pipe, possibly injuring his hips and spine. Bede is currently en route to the hospital to be checked out.

Just moments after Heat 2 got underway, Bede attempted to knife under a massive section at Pipe when he caught a rail and went down in perhaps the worst spot possible. When Bede finally surfaced he was visibly shaken and appeared to be in quite a bit of pain. Fortunately, water patrol was there and quickly pulled Bede out of the impact zone and to the beach where the medical team wheel him off on a gurney.

“We’re competitors temporarily, but friends forever,” said Keanu in his post heat interview. “This wave is very serious. I don’t wish the worst upon anybody. I just hope everybody’s okay.”

Bede’s wipeout comes just days after Owen Wright and Evan Geiselman suffered similar wipeouts at the very same spot. We’re wishing Bede a speedy recovery.
