Shark sightings off the Southern California coast continued Wednesday night when an 8-footer was spotted 200 yards off Newport Beach. The shark was seen by a patrol helicopter in the waters off of 36th Street.
As a precaution, lifeguards closed a two-mile stretch of beach between the Newport pier and 56th Street, a mile in each direction from where the shark was seen. At 8 a.m. Thursday, the city reopened the beach.
