While cruising around on his SUP off the coast of Laguna Beach last week, Rich German finally fulfilled his dream of seeing orca whales in the wild. While on his daily SUP excursion, Rich noticed a group of boats just hanging out in a group a few miles offshore. Remembering that he had heard about a small pod of orca whales that were seen making their way down from Long Beach a few days prior, Rich thought he would test his luck and paddle out to see if it was the same pod of orcas. Much to his surprise, Rich was met with a rare, once in a lifetime experience. A pod of these highly intelligent animals graciously breached and swam within just a few feet of Rich. Although orcas have been spotted in this area, it is extremely rare – especially in such close proximity. They swam so close to Rich that at one point, he dropped to his knees because he though the orca was going to knock him off his paddleboard.
