The 2014 Fiji Women’s Pro, event #5 of the 2014 Samsung Galaxy ASP Women’s World Championship Tour, will take place on the Fijian island of Tavarua beginning on May 25th and run through May 30th. This waiting period sits squarely in the middle of the South Pacific and Indian Ocean’s powerfully fueled winter swell window. The shallow reefs of the heart-shaped island of Tavarua collaborate with the heavy swell to create flawlessly shaped surf that is the epitome of surfing perfection.
As a returning event on the ASP Women’s WCT, the 2014 Fiji Women’s Pro has the potential to be equal parts ground breaking, challenging, and fear instilling. The Women’s Top 17 and ASP Wildcard Ella Williams will discover the world-class reeling lefts of Cloudbreak and Restaurants to be the biggest litmus test on the 2014 ASP Women’s WCT schedule.
Cloudbreak will prove to be the ladies’ biggest challenge – from its hard-to-determine line up at The Ledge to its difficult to negotiate Middles and Shish Kabobs sections. Judging from the level of commitment and the performance barriers being shattered on today’s ASP Women’s WCT, it seems certain that we will see the ladies continue to push the boundaries of women’s surfing northward another notch or two by charging hard during the entirety of the 2014 Fiji Women’s Pro.
Current World #1 Carissa Moore has a healthy 6,300 point lead over her closest rival on the strength of event wins at both the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro and the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Bell Beach, along with a runner up result at the Rio Women’s Pro, and an equal 3rd at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast.
An event win at the 2014 Fiji Women’s Pro could put Carissa all but out of reach for her 2014 World Title adversaries. Carissa’s closest World Title competition, Sally Fitzgibbons, Tyler Wright and Stephanie Gilmore will be throwing everything they have at the Fijian freight trains, quite possibly getting the best waves of their lives while chasing the dream of a highly coveted event win at the 2014 Fiji Women’s Pro.
This event will be won by the surfer that shows the highest amount of commitment in challenging the great waves of Tavarua, requiring the prime performance of their life to culminate triumphantly.
All the live and on demand action can be viewed here, while the Men’s 2014 Fiji Pro event begins on June 1st, shortly upon completion of the women’s event.
