road-trip

Depending on which hemisphere you live in,  summer/winter breaks are just around the corner. And you what that means: road trips. Whether it’s a day-long tour up the coast or the trip you have been planning all year, you’ll need to bring your A-game in order to turn the dull into fun.

I have spent more time in a mate’s car than I can count, and I’ve driven my buddies all over. The following dos and don’ts are all you need to know to make the cut on the next trip.

Don’t

1.Don’t sleep when you’re in the passenger seat. You are the designated DJ, and it’s your responsibility to keep the vibe alive and the driver from falling asleep. If you do sleep, be prepared to wake up to a proper tea bagging on your forehead.

2. Don’t pretend to sleep when you get to a gas station. Helping cover costs is always appreciated, and nobody likes a tight ass.

3. Don’t bring a novelty instrument you can’t play. It will be funny for about ten seconds. After this, you risk being asked to leave the moving vehicle with a boot.

4. Don’t have chili or curry the night before. It will be funny for about five seconds and then you’ll be ejected rom the car ass first.

5. Don’t be a dick. When you get where you are going, you don’t need to be the newest best friend to the locals. A little but of respect, though, will get you a lot further than being an obnoxious loud mouth knob that just blew in.

Dos

1. Do some research. Knowing the place you are going can help take the hassle out of making snap decisions about where to head or where to check. Poorly educated snap decisions normally lead to shitty surfs or missed opportunities, and no one wants to hear “you should’ve been here yesterday” at the pub.

2. Do come ready to laugh, especially at yourself. Taking the piss out of each other can be a hoot, but taking the piss out of yourself can be priceless.

3. Do have an open mind to the crew’s tunes. Your music, no matter how much you think others should dig it, may need to take a back seat.

4. Do bring your freaking wallet! Mooching off the crew you’re hanging with is no way to endear yourself. At the very least, get the driver a coffee, beer, burger and so on.

5. Do bring the spirit of those that have gone before you. Keep in mind that adventure happens (like magic, but less socially awkward). The next point or bay is always worth a look, and you never know what’s around the corner.
