The Inertia

This winter has already been an epic one for the big wave surf community. However, fans of the sport have been anxiously awaiting two of the sport’s highest profile contests: The Eddie and Titans of Mavericks.

With great waves and amazing conditions on more than one occasion contest organizers have been waiting for the perfect chance to run at Mavs only for it all to be put on hold this week thanks the Super Bowl. This week has been epic in Northern California, both in and out of the water. America’s biggest one day party is taking place in the Bay Area, just an hour’s drive away from one of the most famous big wave spots on the planet. With the wave of people coming to Santa Clara all week for Super Bowl 50, local safety resources have forced Titans onto the backburner.

Earlier in the week, Titans of Mavericks event director Darren Brilhart had this to say about passing on what’s been a historic week of waves at Mavericks: “We have been closely monitoring this swell, unfortunately multiple agencies, which are essential to our event operations, are in a blackout period during Super Bowl week/weekend, so we have no choice but to pass on this swell. There are still plenty of days left in our waiting period, and we are confident to run the event on the best day still to come.”

With the “blackout” laws putting Mavs on hold through this swell, contest organizers, fans and competitors have until the end of March to hope for another run of swell worthy of running this year’s event.
