This video of Christian Michael Mares charging Palisades, a steep section of Sugar Bowl Resort on Donner Pass in Northern California, is a reminder that you don’t have to be in the backcountry to get caught in a slide. Plenty of avalanches happen on in-bounds terrain, especially after heavy snows. Mares airs into a steep section and then gets carried down the mountain. He was lucky to be able to stay on top of the slide. “Sorry for blowing up media today,” he said on his Instagram account. “But it’s one of those unfortunate kinda days.”
It’s been a weird week at Sugar Bowl. Twenty-three-year-old ski instructor Carson May has been missing since Thursday when he went skiing on his day off. According to a story on SFgate.com updated Saturday, the search is still ongoing.
