The Inertia

Word around the water cooler is that wave pools will redefine the future of surfing. Not having held a proper contest in one yet means no one knows for sure, but what is for certain is that developers aren’t stopping to pontificate first. Greg Webber of Webber Wave Pools has set an exact location to break ground for his first installment. It will be in Glenview on Australia’s Sunshine Coast, just off Steve Irwin Way near the Mooloolah Connection Road.

The wave pool will become the region’s largest tourist attraction, and should it succeed in producing endless, perfect waves, it would be nice if it thinned out the lineup at Snapper, which lies about ~200km south. We can only imagine how excited Gold Coast locals might be about that. Greg Webber announced that two wave pools – one measuring 160 x 90 meters, the other at 200 x 100 meters – make up the $90 million water park deal, which will also include a 224-unit resort.

According to The Sunshine Coast Daily, an idea is on the table that suggests wave pools might possibly be included as part of the ASP World Tour or that competitions could be held at various parks around the globe. Whether or not that comes to fruition is about as certain as the quality of the waves – and the ASP has made no comment (nor included it on any official schedules), but it makes sense that Webber would want in.
