Some inventions make me mad. Their genius lies in simplicity, and teamed with a healthy dose of practicality, I often look on and think “I wasted that college degree.” This is where my anger comes in, because I inevitably watch something so obvious, easy, and genius that I’m left feeling like a failure.
On the flip side, how many times do you need to have surfboards stolen from you before you say, “Should I do something about this?”
Well, here’s the most recent random of my surf related findings on Kickstarter. It’s called the Shark Lock. Take your center fin out of the fin box (Futures), screw the lock in its place, and insert a padlock. The board itself can’t be swiped without opening the padlock and/or ripping the fin box clean off the board. Simple. Genius.
At the moment Shark Lock has zero backers and therefore zero dollars raised in its campaign. It’s an odd fact because I just showed three friends (mostly so I could keep playing the awesome demo video song) and I got two responses. First: “Dude, I’d buy one of those.” And second: “I’m going home to make one of those tonight.”
So there it is, you can either spend an hour of your time nearly cutting your fingers off, breaking old fins, and maybe ending up with something that resembles surfing’s simplest new invention, or you can give this guy $10,000.
