The Inertia

Surf trips should be simple. They aren’t always simple, but we want them to be. We’d also like them to be cheap. Like dirt cheap. If you can give me overhead barrels in warm water on the cheap then I think we qualify this as a win.

Well, the WSL just teamed up with the accommodations site Airbnb to create the surf themed Swell Dwellings. It’s essentially the original Airbnb with a few extra twists specific to surfers, like a collection of locations where you’re going to get barreled, accommodations in cities/locations with WSL Tour stops, and tips to help the hosts themselves cater a little better to surfers.

“Our goal with Swell Dwellings is to develop a vibrant global community of surf travelers and shared experiences,” said ark Noonan, Global Chief Commercial Officer of the WSL. “With highly curated content, including local tips from Airbnb Superhosts, and background on some of the most beautiful and exotic surf spots in the world, we hope to enhance surf travelers overall love of the sport and help them connect with the global surf community in a more meaningful way. We are ecstatic to partner with the world’s leading accommodations provider, Airbnb, to bring this service to our fans.”

As for the “let’s do this on the cheap” part, they’re launching it all with something that couldn’t possibly be cheaper. While the men’s tour is about to kick off the Fiji Pro this week, the WSL and Airbnb are offering two people the chance to stay on their own private island for $10. “Intimately situated on Wadigi Island, this magnificent WSL Fiji Pro villa, listed on Airbnb, is complete with a staff of eight including two gourmet chefs, hostess, housekeeper and boat captain,” the WSL said in a press release. They’ll be offering up a private boat for ferries to and from Cloudbreak and round trip helicopter rides between the island and Nadi airport.
