Randall Paulson never had a coach. But his Uncle Sam (who used to run the Sands in Honolulu) would give him free boards, his mother taking him to the beach. He long boarded Waikiki, and short boarded the Ala Moana bowls. With no one to tell him what to do, he would get frustrated and go back and forth, trying to teach myself. In seventh grade he paddled out into the lineup at Pipeline, and was hooked from then on.
